New information has emerged about the latest Uber and GTA VI leaks. Other hackers have named a British adolescent as the key suspect in both cyber attacks, which might prompt the FBI to become involved.

Security incident investigation

On September 19, Uber issued a statement on the security compromise that occurred the previous week. The business stated that it is "working closely with the FBI and the United States Department of Justice on this subject."

The FBI and the Department of Justice have not yet commented on the issue, so it is unknown whether they have actually initiated an inquiry.

An unknown hacker entered Uber's internal networks over the weekend by exploiting the account of one of the company's contractors. As a consequence, they gained access to company tools such as Slack and altered the configuration of Uber's OpenDNS to show a sexual picture.

According to the firm, the attacker did not get access to production systems vital to the operation of its apps. Additionally, no user accounts, credit card numbers, or other sensitive information has been compromised.

Uber thinks the hacker is a member of the Lapsus$ hacking gang and may have been involved in the Rockstar Games breach that leaked over 90 gameplay videos from the early version of GTA VI.

What is known about the group Lapsus?

Since the end of 2021, this anonymous hacking organization has been operating. It has around seven members, but the identities of those behind the group are unclear.

Lapsus$ typically targets prominent businesses to encrypt their data and demand a ransom. However, the specific motives for their actions remain unknown.

According to a report by Bloomberg, the organization has compromised Microsoft, Samsung, Nvidia, Ubisoft, and Okta. Typically, they steal the source code and attempt to access additional sensitive data using other security vulnerabilities.

Lapsus$ suffers from inadequate operational security while hitting huge technology organizations. "Unlike other activity groups that remain undetected, [Lapsus$] does not appear to disguise its traces," Microsoft said in a blog post earlier this year after falling prey to the attack.

They even announce their attacks on social media and publicize their aim to purchase credentials from workers of target organizations.

Who is the young hacker responsible for the GTA VI and Uber leaks?

In March, London police detained seven juveniles in connection with the Lapsus$ organization. One of them is a 16-year-old autistic lad from Oxford who goes by "White" and "Breachbase" online. The boy was detained when other hackers exposed his personal information, including his name and address, online.

According to reports, the 16-year-old made around $14 million from his misdeeds. Nonetheless, he appears to have resumed his hacking efforts.

On September 18, an administrator of the Breach Forums said that Arion, another alias used by the 16-year-old Breachbase, was responsible for the GTA VI and Uber hacks.

Michael alias LegacyKillaHD, a blogger, observed that other hackers on the Doxbin website similarly identified Arion as the source of these dumps.

Notably, the hacker known as Teapotuberhacker (perhaps another alias of the 16-year-old British adolescent) claimed he was also responsible for the current Uber breach in addition to the GTA VI release. Therefore, the relationship appears to be true, although it remains to be demonstrated.
